The Illinois REG-10 form serves as a crucial tool for individuals and businesses that purchase natural gas from outside of Illinois for their own use within the state. This form allows these purchasers to register as self-assessors of the Gas Use Tax, thereby taking on the responsibility of reporting and paying this tax directly to the Illinois Department of Revenue instead of through their suppliers. Upon submission and processing of the REG-10 form, the applicant will receive a certificate of registration, which acts as proof of their obligation to manage the Gas Use Tax. It is important to note that certain exemptions exist; for instance, businesses operating in enterprise zones or entities engaged in charitable activities may not need to complete this form. The REG-10 requires detailed information, including the applicant's name, address, and Social Security number or business tax identification numbers, as well as the names of their delivering suppliers. Additionally, applicants must affirm that they do not qualify for any exemptions listed in the instructions. To maintain compliance, the form must be updated every five years or whenever there is a change in the provided information. For any questions regarding the form or the Gas Use Tax, assistance is available through the Illinois Department of Revenue during business hours.
